Low-maintenance Secondary Brake Increases Safety

A growing number of maritime classification and regulatory societies, including American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and DNV GL, require that cranes utilized for lifting personnel be fitted with a secondary brake. Increasingly, more customers have also requested for a secondary braking system on their cranes to enhance safety.

As most LeTourneau cranes in the market are not fitted with a secondary brake, we set out to design a system that provides secondary braking through an independent load path at the drum.

The new brake incorporates a fail-safe design with a spring set and hydraulic release. The multi-disc brake offers several advantages, which include high energy capacity, low maintenance and enhanced lifecycle performance.

Secondary BrakeThe secondary brake does not require structural modification or high tolerance field fit up. Its Plug and Play design also allows for simple component change out.

With minimal new components, field installation of the secondary brake is kept simple. The new brake is integrated into the hoist winch and it is also compatible with the existing wire rope drum, motor and primary brake. The secondary brake also offers a modular configuration for installation on the boom, auxiliary and/or main hosts and the pre-assembled gearbox further minimizes downtime.

The secondary brake fits LeTourneau PCM-120, 220 and 350 crane designs. For more information, please download our brochure or consult our team to discuss how we can enhance your crane operating experience:
